The itinerary takes the ancient caravan route (this side of the Sahara) after stopping in Marrakech, Meknes and Fez, the most intriguing imperial cities. It is also a 5 hours drive through the Sahara. Arrive in Ouarzazate, the “little Marrakech”, then follow the Atlantic coast along the deserted beaches and turquoise waters and unveil the unique architecture and farniente of Essaouira or a-die-for sea food of Tassourt. The pace is carefully balanced and ample time for rest and leisure has been thought out. The myriad of landscapes is matched only by the diversity of cultures and their heritage: Arab, Berber, Touareg, Jewish, Portuguese and French.
From time-in-suspended fishing villages to Berber adobe palaces, desert oases and Portuguese fortresses to millennia-old Arab medina and still-running university, this is Morocco’s thousand-and-one-faced ‘tour.
Welcome to Morocco! An arrival transfer from Marrakech airport to our hotel is included. Tonight we will enjoy a traditional dinner in Casablanca. Overnight – Casablanca.
Casablanca, made famous by Humphrey Bogart in the movie “Casablanca”. We then have the option to visit the impressive Hassan II Mosque, which has the tallest minaret and the third largest mosque in the world, which can hold 25,000 worshippers at any given time. We then head straight to Rabat to enjoy the nightlife atmosphere of Morocco’s capital. Overnight – Rabat.
We will spend the morning in the capital of Morocco Rabat to visit Oudaia Kasbah, Hassan tower, the Royal Palace and Chellah. After lunch we will move on to the third part of our imperial cities of Meknes to enjoy some free time. Overnight – Meknes.
After breakfast, we will embark on a tour of the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the largest ancient site in Morocco. Protected by UNESCO, the site dates back to AD40 and once ruled the entire Roman province of Mauritania. We will then head to Chefchaouen for a guided tour this afternoon. High in the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen boasts a beautiful blue gate and white walled Medina which was originally a Berber outpost. The main square is the heart of Chefchaouen, with the Kasbah (built in the 18th century), the central mosque and cafes with authentic menus. The busy market is a mix of traditional Moroccan and tourist fare. Overnight – Chefchaouen.
Enjoy some free time in Chefchaouen this morning – relax at the hotel or spend your time exploring this beautiful city. Then we will enjoy lunch in Chefchaouen before moving on to Fes in the afternoon. Fez is the oldest and largest medieval city in the world, and its medina is a heady mix of scents, sounds and sights. To navigate, follow one of the five themed tourist circuits. There are plenty of mosques and palaces to visit, but note that only Muslims can enter mosques in Morocco. Overnight – Fes.
Today we embark on a guided tour of the city of Fez. Explore the tanneries, souks, pottery workshops, and the Medina, and learn the fascinating history of the city. Later return to the hotel to prepare for an evening of optional Moroccan entertainment and lunch at a local restaurant. Overnight – Fes.
Gorges – Erracidia – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga Desert :
Today is time to relax after the hustle and bustle of Fes, we enjoy a stunning drive rewarded by superior Moroccan views, crossing the region of the Middle Atlas Mountains. This is a beautiful alpine area. Surrounded by huge pine trees and a tranquile mountain environment. Visit Azrou to take in Barbary monkeys and nomadic shepherds on the scenic, scenic journey between the Orient and the High Atlas Mountains. Independent lunch in Midelt, we walk on the river Ziz through a series of fortified villages made by clay, and then to Erfoud and Rissani, depart to towards the dunes of Erg Chebbi, located near the remote border town of Merzouga. The dunes are renowned for their height and incredible size. In some parts the large pile of sand reaches skyward to a height of 150 meters! Transfer to our camels. We will walk in the Sahara for a night in our Berber camp. Tonight enjoy a local meal, music and an amazing night under the stars of the Sahara. Overnight – dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Tour the most spectacular sand dunes of the Moroccan desert, located in the beautiful desert of Merzouga. Listen to Gnaoua spiritual music live show. Visit the nomads emabrgo tent and share some real moments with them, we will head to see some fossilized animals in the natural rocks, we will visit Rissani, the holy city of Rissani, a site where the ancestors of the Alaouite dynasty are buried in the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Sherif, with its authentic souk (market) and have a Berber pizza for lunch, then back to the Kasbah to get some time to relax and shower …. you can go to visit a Berber family in their house … and if you miss the sunset the day before, you still have the chance t0 catch it … Tonight is a live music show by a local famouse band (if you have the chance ! !)
Leaving the desert, we move on to Todra Gorge. This 1000ft gorge is enclosed on all sides by vertical limestone cliffs, and is also called Morocco’s Grand Canyon. There is time to explore the gorge, from its depths plunging to dizzying heights. The charm of Todra lies in its changing colors as the sun slowly moves from east to west. Then, travel to Dades valley, a green and fertile valley by the Dades river that flows through it giving life to a variety of colorful fruit and nut trees and extraordinary red rock formations. The “route of a thousand kasbahs” takes us through the pink Vally, a visit to the oasis of Skoura with its authentic kasbahs 17th century, then follow Ouarzazat, “the Hollywood of Africa” and a visit to its film museum. After lunch, visit of the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, where once Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. Overnight – Ait Ben Haddou.
After visiting this UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, our journey will continue. Today’s drive offers panoramic views as we cross the high Atlas Mountains on our way to Essaouira. A colorful old town and fishing village lies within the 15th century Portuguese fortifications. Just outside the town beautiful beaches and an inviting Atlantic surf.
Relax on the beach or explore the medina listed by UNESCO with its various souks and woodcarving workshops. Any city gate leads to the Medina, so you are unlikely to get lost. The beach is in front of the Medina and there are plenty of cafes with terraces, both ideal for relaxing for a few hours. Blue doors and window frames abound as do artists’ stores – buy a wood carving from tuya or sit on the beach sipping a mint tea as the sun sets, an antidote to the hustle and bustle of the imperial cities. You will have the option to participate in horseback riding or quad biking. Overnight – Essaouira
After breakfast, we drive from Essaouira back to Marrakech this morning, to explore the last of the four imperial cities of Morocco that we visit on this tour. Marrakech set against the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Its great pride and emblem is the Koutoubia Tower, sister to the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville. It is said that after the third part of them was completed, the sultan had his architect’s eyes turned off, lest he build another more beautiful tower elsewhere. No visit to the city is complete without a visit to the UNESCO-listed medina of the city and the Djemaa el-Fna square, an extraordinary meeting and market place. Overnight – Marrakech
Breakfast, make sure you packed luggage. Enjoy a morning tour of the city. Visit the Saadi Tombs, dating back to the 16th century, where Saadi royalty found their final resting place. Your tour also includes the Koutoubia Minaret, the beautiful Bahia Palace, as well as the opportunity to shop for Moroccan spices and herbs. Finally, end the walking tour in the medina, have the opportunity to admire all the different craftsmen performing their craft before arriving at the Jaama El Fna Square.Visit the Majorelle Gardens and the Museum of Marrakech.
